Squadron 42 Delayed to 2027 to Avoid the GTA 6 Launch
One of the most anticipated space games of 2026 is officially moving into next year.
Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts has announced that Squadron 42, the long-awaited single-player game set in the Star Citizen universe, will no longer launch in late 2026.
The new target is Q2 2027.
The surprising part isn't simply another Squadron 42 delay. Roberts says one of the major reasons for choosing the new window is another enormous game arriving around the same time: Grand Theft Auto VI.
Squadron 42 Was Planned for Late 2026
At CitizenCon 2024, Cloud Imperium Games announced that Squadron 42 was targeting a 2026 release.
We now know the internal plan was more specific.
Roberts says the studio intended to launch Squadron 42 during Q4 2026 around IAE, the annual Intergalactic Aerospace Expo associated with Star Citizen.
Those plans have now changed.
Rather than competing for attention during one of the biggest gaming launches in years, Cloud Imperium Games has moved Squadron 42 into the second quarter of 2027.
That puts its current release window somewhere between April and June 2027.
Why Is Squadron 42 Delayed?
Grand Theft Auto VI is a major part of the explanation.
Roberts described releasing Squadron 42 around GTA 6 as launching into an "attention buzz saw."
Even though GTA 6 isn't launching on PC at the same time, Roberts expects gaming publications, YouTubers, streamers and other creators to spend an enormous amount of time covering Rockstar's game.
For Squadron 42, that presents a marketing problem.
After more than a decade of development, Cloud Imperium Games doesn't want the game's eventual release overshadowed by what could be one of the largest entertainment launches ever.
GTA 6 Is Already Affecting Other Games
The decision demonstrates just how much influence Grand Theft Auto VI has over the wider gaming industry's release calendar.
Publishers normally try to avoid releasing major games directly alongside another blockbuster, but GTA 6 presents an unusually difficult situation.
Its launch isn't expected to dominate attention for just a day.
Reviews, livestreams, guides, videos, social media clips and discussions surrounding GTA 6 could dominate gaming coverage for weeks.
Cloud Imperium Games has decided it would rather wait.
After more than a decade of development, Cloud Imperium Games doesn't want Squadron 42 fighting GTA 6 for the gaming world's attention.
Is GTA 6 the Only Reason for the Delay?
The GTA 6 release window is the reason Roberts gave for moving Squadron 42 into Q2 2027, but the additional development time won't go unused.
Cloud Imperium Games continues working on polishing and optimizing Squadron 42 ahead of release.
Roberts has said the final development push currently gives Squadron 42 a larger share of the company's development resources, with the goal of getting the game polished and optimized before launch.
Once Squadron 42 is completed, more developers can shift their attention toward bringing Star Citizen itself closer to its planned 1.0 release.
When Will Squadron 42 Release?
The official target is now:
Q2 2027
That means Squadron 42 is currently expected between April 1 and June 30, 2027.
There is not yet an exact release date.
However, players may not have to wait very long to learn more.
Cloud Imperium Games plans to allow a small group of original backers and longtime Star Citizen content creators to play Squadron 42 on October 9 and October 10, 2026.
Roberts says additional release plans will be announced around those sessions, with a specific release date expected shortly afterward.
That makes October an important month for anyone waiting for Squadron 42.
What Is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is the cinematic single-player game set within the Star Citizen universe.
Rather than Star Citizen's persistent online sandbox, Squadron 42 delivers a story-driven campaign built around space combat, first-person action and exploration.
The project also features an unusually recognizable cast, including actors such as Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill and Mark Strong.
Cloud Imperium Games has spent more than a decade developing the project alongside Star Citizen.
That lengthy development history also means any new Squadron 42 delay is likely to attract plenty of attention from both fans and critics.
Another Wait for Star Citizen Fans
Players who expected to finally experience Squadron 42 before the end of 2026 will have to wait several more months.
The difference this time is that Cloud Imperium Games has provided a narrower target.
Instead of a general 2027 window, Q2 2027 is now the goal, and an exact release date could arrive after the October play sessions.
Whether avoiding GTA 6 ultimately proves worthwhile remains to be seen.
For Cloud Imperium Games, however, the calculation is clear: after spending more than a decade building Squadron 42, the studio doesn't want its launch fighting Grand Theft Auto VI for the gaming world's attention.
Release Timer will continue tracking Squadron 42 as Cloud Imperium Games announces its final release date.
