Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the first mainline entry in the Onimusha series since 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Directed by Satoru Nihei and produced by Akihito Kadowaki, the title is built on the RE Engine. Set in a dark fantasy version of 17th-century Kyoto during the early Edo period, the story follows the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, who is modeled after actor Toshiro Mifune, as he battles demonic Genma monsters that have overrun the capital with clouds of malice.
Gameplay features third-person sword battles focused on blocking, deflecting projectiles, parrying, and executing precise counter-attacks known as Issen. Equipped with a sentient gauntlet, Musashi absorbs souls from defeated enemies to restore health, fund skill upgrades, and wield powerful Oni Armaments. Exploration incorporates wider open-zone regions in Kyoto containing enemy encampment rifts, as well as an alternate shrine dimension dedicated to skill training and boss rematches.
