Announced at RuneFest 2026, RuneScape 4 (working title RS4) is a next-generation MMORPG set in the fantasy world of Gielinor. Built using Unreal Engine, the project represents a major technological step forward for the franchise while maintaining traditional series elements such as permanent character progression.
Narratively set in the Sixth Age, the game's initial story begins in Ashenfall, a north-eastern region first introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Taking place years after the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, the landscape has transformed, serving as the starting point for an adventure planned to expand into familiar and new areas of Gielinor over time.
The project is designed as an independent title operating alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds. Backed by its own dedicated development team, it is intended to expand the overall franchise ecosystem rather than replace existing games.
