Star Citizen is a space trading and combat simulation video game led by creative director Chris Roberts. Conceptualized as an expansion of unrealized ideas from Freelancer, the project features both single-player (Squadron 42) and multiplayer modes. The game is built using StarEngine.
Development began following its announcement in 2012 and a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that raised over 2 million dollars. The project was initially rolled out in modular releases to allow backers to test individual gameplay components, including the Persistent Universe testing module introduced in 2015.
