Tears of Metal follows a Scottish battalion fighting to reclaim their home island after a Dragon Stone Meteor event draws invading forces intent on harvesting the stone's power. Players fight through chaotic battlefields across more than 45 handcrafted environments, taking on waves of enemies alongside specialized captains, minibosses, and dynamic hazards that scale with a region's rising threat level.
Combat combines light and heavy attacks, parries, and hero abilities with real-time tactical squad leadership. Players generate meter in combat to issue direct orders to their troops, such as directing infantry charges or signaling archer volleys. Soldiers earn permanent experience and skills across campaigns, but any troops slain during a battle suffer permanent death. Between attempts, players return to their settlement to build new shops, unlock heroes and weapon variants, and combine over a hundred artifacts to craft distinct builds for subsequent runs.
