Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Although the Emancipation Proclamation legally declared enslaved people in Confederate states free on January 1, 1863, it was unenforceable in Texas without military presence. Freedom finally arrived in the state on June 19, 1865, when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to issue General Order No. 3, proclaiming freedom for more than 250,000 enslaved people.
It became an official national holiday when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law on June 17, 2021. Celebrations across the country often feature parades, speeches, family reunions, and gatherings.
