Memorial Day serves as a day of remembrance dedicated to honoring military personnel who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces. Common observances include decorating graves with flags or flowers at national cemeteries, attending commemorative services, flying the American flag at half-staff until noon, and participating in a national moment of silence at 3:00 PM.
The holiday grew out of post-Civil War traditions when local communities gathered to adorn the graves of fallen soldiers. Originally called Decoration Day, its first major national proclamation occurred in 1868 through General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic. Following World War I, the scope of remembrance expanded beyond Civil War casualties to honor service members who died in all American military conflicts.

- How does Memorial Day differ from Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day?
- Memorial Day specifically commemorates service members who died in the line of duty. Armed Forces Day honors those currently serving on active duty, while Veterans Day recognizes all individuals who have served in the military.
- Where did Memorial Day originate?
- Numerous towns held early observances after the Civil War. Historical records also show an earlier 1865 tribute in Charleston, South Carolina, organized by formerly enslaved residents.
- Why is Memorial Day observed on the last Monday in May?
